The 8-bit Game Boy was sold between 1989 and 2003, but its architecture more closely resembles machines from the early 1980s, like the Commodore 64 or the NES. This talk attempts to communicate “everything about the Game Boy” to the listener, including its internals and quirks, as well as the tricks that have been used by games and modern demos, reviving once more the spirit of times when programmers counted clock cycles and hardware limitations were seen as a challenge.

  1. We laugh at that camera having a bit depth of 2 but it does really well within that. It appears to dither too!

  2. what the heck is he sayingwhy so much numbersmy head, it hurtswhat the hell is a vrami think i started fusing with the universe

  3. Click settings -> Playback speed -> select 0.75you welcome

  4. Damn, I don’t quite understand what he is saying…but I don’t feel like an idiot, I feel informed, by a very patient speaker.

  5. This guy's frequent sharp intakes of breath are horribly distracting. Maybe if he didn't talk a mile a minute he wouldn't be constantly gasping for air

  6. I'm still uncertain: is the announcer looking forward to this talk or not?

  7. I didn't even know the 'GB Boy' existed until now. Apparently it can be modified to operate at the proper clock speed.

  8. Perhaps next year we will have a talk about the Elektronika BK and it's excellent graphics system.

  9. Is this the guy who makes the nice videos with the graphics on Youtube?

  10. I changed the quartz in my GB Boy with a proper one and now it runs at 100%. Cheap and quick fix. Edit: I used a 4.194304 MHz HC49/4H quartz

  11. what was that link cable he mentioned at the end? I'm kind of interested

  12. Such a great talk! Content but especially presentation are just perfect, its very rare to see such a good presentation. Same is valid for his C64 talk a few years ago.

  13. Great educational video, hardware based the way I like it, dressed with Assembler on the side, yummy!
Never heard of 33C3 but I'll follow now

  14. This guy should make an FPGA based Game Boy.

  15. Amazing how someone can wrap their head around all these microprocessor architectures

  16. Michael Steil is the new standard everyone should follow for technical talks. The way he explaines things is just awesome

  17. Did any games actually use the hack mentioned at 20:38? I can't find anything about it on the internet.

  18. I can't find that 34c3 talk, has it been uploaded?

  19. cuando eres mexicano y estudias ingles
