The form factor for the original Game Boy Advance is generally preferred by most people over the SP, however its non lit screen makes it much harder to use today. I wanted to spend some time and build what I would call The Ultimate Game Boy Advance using a new screen, better speaker and even a rechargeable battery pack through USB-C. Today we’ll be completing the build and bringing an old classic system up to modern times.

I installed a backlit screen on mine. Found a GBA at a thrift store for cheap. I thought why not. It’s very nice.
Wait so how does the GBA get power from that battery mod? You just plugged the battery into the daughter board, which isn't even connected to the GBA at all. I'm confused.
I remember having a rubber grip for my GBA SP. It made holding it a 1000 times better.
I love your videos man, keep up the good work!
Just got my IPS V2 screen in the mail and can’t wait to do this mod. Thanks for posting this video!
What's the website you got all the parts from?
Looks pretty good, But it can't be the Ultimate GBA until you get buttons coloured to emulate the look of a Gamecube controller.
Dude please mod mine like yours, I will pay you,
i can´t find that batery mod, help?
Nice mod…. Do you have the parts list???
gba sound is crap anyway, wouldn't want it any louder tbh.
1:24 crazy muffle

13:50 sure does look nice, but shouldn't it say gameboy advance?
Awesome video, I wish I would have had a gba like this back in the day!
Amazing!
I remember something! The last video I saw your name in was Alpha’s Splatoon 2 Salmon Run. Boy, does time fly!
killer soundtrack
10:20 where in the world did you get this beautiful cover?!
Edit: 🤦♂️🤦♂️nevermind I'm just stupid
Basically a worse ds that can connect to colosseum
The ultimate GameBoy Advance is actually a DS lite (non modded) or a 3DS (modded).
Impressed until you touched the inside of the screen with your oily finger and then clipped the back cover in a hurry to get the video complete.
I think I would have cut the tip of a usb cable off, plugged it into the gba, then paint the clipped usb with white paint and put the cover on, the cover wouldn't go on all the way but would touch the paint leaving a white mark on the inside of the cover, then you can drill/slice/melt a new hole.
Cool thing but i would stay with regular AA size rechargable batteries. It' has more capacity required for ips screen – more energy draining. Also better for quick replace when you are in travel.
I would pay for him to make me one exactly the same. I miss playing on the Gameboy.
My 3DS with some hacky magic makes the best GBA I can play on, without emulation.
Does anybody have any tips on how to get all of this in easiest as possible as Ive never modded anything muchless an electronic??
Can I send you my gba and you could make it ultimate
Still lacking microswitch for the dpad
That looks cool at the end I agree it's not the tidiest but an amazing screen and sound plus the USB-C charging port and battery I have a portable battery dock that works really well so it would go well with that aswell as your phone and portable speaker so you could charge incar while driving and then use the portable battery charging dock to finnish charging when you arrive at your destination
I was way too old when it finally clicked that the point of the sp was that it looked like the original gameboy when it was open. However, having grown up in the 90's , I went seamlessly from the gbc to the gba (i swapped a digivice for it with a friend at school) and you're right, it's absolutely the best form factor for playing, I've even been playing 3ds a lot recently and as its so thin, causes cramping. The thickness of the og gba was brilliant, played it well into my teens. Very tempted to either buy a modded one or buy a regular one and mod it myself, but I'd also have to buy soldering stuff which won't get used again. Also I'm 30 and have a house to save for lol.
But living vicariously through the tech youtubers doing the mod has bought me great happiness recently (specifically yourself and Retro Future). So thank you.
As a 16 year old with no job, this is fiction. Someday I will have the money to do this. That is my dream
The ultimate GBA indeed, awesome video.
Anyone knows of a link to buy the screen and screwdrivers for the wide gba ?
where do I find links to all the stuff on here?
Any idea on a type of solder. Any generic lead free will do?
Great vid. I need this gba!
Get a flash cart and you got the perfect gameboy
what soldering station do you use?
You are talking too much, please stop it and just show us without talking please

Where can i download final fantasy 7 pc /steam rom _iso thanks
Can i mod it with a oled screen or 1080p thanks
I'm doing this.
I'm making my own dream gba just like you did Jon.
You've inspired me.
Alternative name: Modernized GBA
I'm no good with Tech can you build me one and I buy it from you 🙏
It's coming up to a year since this video, so how about something new involving a Nintendo handheld?
Hey @Spawn, any links to a affordable ips v2 screen and shells? Looks like prices went up on ebay…
I never had a gameboy advance but I found one whenever they first came out in a taxi I was in and I gave it back to the taxi cab driver whenever I found it it was brand new I was honest I should of kept it but I didnt
