The final video about the Game Boy Advance backlight mod. I finally got the screen to look decent; here’s how I did it.

If you haven’t seen it, here’s where we began the journey:

  1. Hello, and thank you for sharing this video. I have questions.
I have bought a GBA backlighted  AGS 101 on eBay, and the light works perfectly, but there are ghosting effects. However, under the shell I've found out that there is no wire and no solder point on the adaptator like your GBA, how can the light works ? I don't really understand. I'm gonna test turning clockwise that little thing, and I would be grateful if you could give me a piece of advice to delete ghosting effects. Well, I hope you have understood my english, greetings from France !! 🙂

  2. I need to do this mod, have to use the AGB-01 model and form factor because of the built-in 3.5mm jack since it's very difficult to get everything working proper with the adapter that gives headphone output since I'm a chiptuner. thanks for the tips and install process! I have 1 afterburner GBA, but my other GBA is a hello kitty model that I severely want to have a backlight since I love pink so much 😀

  3. Could you help me with my problem with mine? mine is to bright

  4. Screens seem to have dried up but still plenty of places to get the ribbon cable adaptor. Do you have any recommendations on who or where to buy them from?

  5. I just did this mod. I believe it is stuck on the 2nd brightness. The less brighter of the 2. Does messing with the potentiometer change this?

  6. Hi. If on the GBA the pot increases the voltage (for the whole system? wouldn't that be like overclocking the GBA and making the subcomponent have a shorter life?) I was wondering what the potentiometer in a Gameboy SP (AGS-101) is for? When you're adjusting the trim pot, do you need to turn it on and off for both the SP and the doing the GBA mod or you can keep both consoles on and turn the pot while it's ON?

By the way, it may just be the video but it seems to have very visible lines and the black (especially when it's a thick black border) has lines and seems a little white with a bit of line. If this is the case in person, It may have compatibility issues with the two kinds of AGS-101 screens (they have different cables). AGS-101 screens are not compatible with all AGS-101 boards.

Thank you. God bless. Rev. 21:4

  7. crappy gameplay? see darksidephil lmfao

  8. Would you say this mod makes the GBA just as bright as the SP with brightness all the way up?

  9. I was lucky enough to watch this video first before modding so the trim pot adjustment was the first and only tweak i needed to do. The buttons seems a little tight now but hopefully they will loosen up soon. Love your videos.

  10. The amount of rotation between being bad one way and being bad the other is so very tiny.
Mine came from an actual SP but it looked really odd in the GBA, flickering when you move with horizontal lines and repeated pixels, you can stop it repeating pixels and flickering when moved, but vertical scrolling still leaves visible horizontal lines until you get it rotated to an exact position the screen is happy with.
I'm so happy with my mod, and for my first mod I'm quite pleased with it, thank you for your videos, they were a great help.

  11. Do you think it would be possible to replace the LCD screen with an OLED one?

  12. I'm finding it really hard to believe that LCD tech had gone so far that a backlit screen would save more battery than a unlit one. Though with these results now I really want to do this to my GBA but it looks like it's gone sky high with demand.

  13. Hmmm… The interference looked like screen-dooring, meaning you can see the lines between the individual pixels elements on the actual screen. Maybe they just weren't being powered enough and thus the "interference". The pixel elements just were too dim themselves and not filling the screen with light, from pixel edge to pixel edge. Just a guess. I'm not an engineer, but I can imagine this would be the case. The trim pot is like a light dimmer.

  14. So basically I'm buying a gba and I want the backlit capability so yeah can I send it to you and pay for you to do this for me?

  15. hi one question game boy gamers. i have an unmodded (far as i know) stock gba; will this work for it? i just ordered the wing tip screw driver

  16. it had noise issues because the back light took some voltage, gaining the voltage back is the only fix 😀

  17. Not sure if anybody's mentioned this on this video, but the housing has a direct access hole for the trimpot under the information sticker on the back (not the barcode, the other one) so you don't have to open it up over and over again to fiddle with it.

  18. I'm getting bright and really almost white screen that's only visible at very wierd angle, has anyone faced this?

  19. Very cool man, I appreciate it all. Very detailed videos on this mod. Love it, makes me want to go do it myself.

  20. i just did this mod today. my main problem is the screen is too blury even of I tweak the potentiometer. my back light seems to be too bright as well.Do you have any suggestions to fix this problem?

  21. when you did this mod: whats the default brightness level of the display? i ask because with the AGS 101 Dispaly there are two brightness level.. so whats the brightness level after the mod? the normal or brighter level? thx `!!

  22. I dont have the correct tool to TaKe out the things that holds the back in ;(And I really wanted to fix this…

  23. What would happen if the DA1 pin broke off? Would there be any other way to route power? Or is it completely gone by then?

  24. i want to see something new as the DS lines gone long enough and i love the look of the original GBA the DS's all look the same to me nothing interesting that separates each one.

  25. Guess what. I just totally screwed up my entire brand-new GameBoy Advance by literally screwing with the trim pot. All it's worth is the case now. The screen is dead(doesn't really matter anyway, I cured the LOCA wrong and it was spidered) and I can't get it to stay on for more than about 8 seconds. Do this at your own risk everyone, the trim pot is actually a flicker adjuster anyway. I'm not blaming you, Colin, but basically I think you should HEAVILY warn everyone. It totally sucked for me because I was so exited and was waiting for so long…

  26. probably has to do with the power draw the new screen has and as a result the screen not getting enough power causing that interference, by adjusting that pot you're most likely sending more power to the screen and backlight. the fact that if you turn it to much and the screen going bad again is because you're past the 100% position of the pot and rotated to 0% again.

  27. Hey bud,
    awesome video!
Would you be able to help me out on where you found the kit? Been doing some google searches and yet to find somebody who sells the screen and adapter for the GBA

    Thanks mate!

  28. Maybe I am missing something. Why not use the Gameboy Advanced SP?

  29. i think you, made a very good point on the tweak, thank you !

  30. Is using a rechargeable battery cheaper than AA batteries? I know that if I do this mod, I will get a constant amount of battery juice each time it is replaced, but if I get an SP, the battery will decay from charging over time and will eventually have to get replaced.

  31. hi. congratulations for this channel! just wanted to know, or just a suggestion for another vídeo. would you front light a neo geo pocket color? it' s a very nice system that seems to need a hardware update… any way, wish this is possible, it would help me lots. thanks for al those great mods you have done. al the best

  32. does your gba need to be Backlot to do this?

  33. Why i have ghosting/image retention with this mod? i moded 2 consoles and the two has the same problem, a fucking IR

  34. My gba sp has that same thing on the back behind the battery; when I turn it, it changes the screen. It's kinda like a contrast adjuster for the gba. Mine was the AGS-001

  35. I think the problem is that you have a 32 pin GBA and a type AB/B AGS-101 screen. In the first video, we can see that you have a 32 pin connector and that your new screen has a brown connector at the end before the ribbon adapter. Such combinaison is known to have dim brightness and interference.

Unfortunately, besides the solution you gave in this video (which can be hazardous for your GBA), there is no straight forward solution like 40 pin GBAs.
