The Game Boy gets its third baseball title, unsurprisingly making the so-called “thinking man’s sport” also the most prolific “gaming boy’s sport” as well. You may know this franchise better as R.B.I. Baseball, but since that particular bit of branding had become associated with unlicensed provocateurs attempting to undermine Nintendo’s lock on the U.S. market, publisher Bandai unsurprisingly went with the different title.

  1. Thanks for introducing me to this one. I'm not into real sports or sports games, but Extra Bases is super fun and replayable.

  2. You could cheese this game so bad while pitching. I don't remember exactly what to do, but if you stand in just the right spot and hold down left or right while you pitch they can never hit it (and getting to the right spot wasn't hard to achieve). At least that worked during my limited play time.

  3. Hal wrestling… was in reality developed by Human, and its very "Fire pro wrestling" style. Pretty decent. Some people consider it the best on the system.

  4. Actually with some teams you can steal 2B with 80% probability. What's the best baseball game for the Game Boy mono?

  5. Oh yeah. Keep the Game Boy games coming.

  6. Is the (I'm assuming unlicensed) Neon Genesis Evangelion music a casualty of Retronauts's increased business focus?

  7. Your opening graphic compositing skillzzz are over 9000! Seriously, it's really good. Also… "inings". Come ON Namco.

  8. Jeremy, why the name change from Game Boy World to Works?

  9. [Insert sexual innuendo joke about getting to bases here]

  10. As a fan of sports video games myself, I've always had a soft spot for Extra Bases. It gave me what I wanted at the time– a playable version of RBI Baseball (license excluded) on the go. We take this portability for granted now, but back then, it was really cool to be able to fire up the Game Boy during breaks at work or just before bed.

I know that it's not a remarkable game by any stretch, but it doesn't have to be. It's the warm familiarity that kept me coming back and keeps Extra Bases so near and dear to me today.

  11. RBI is the couch multi player game that is forever fun because of its mechanics!

  12. Running away from the ball? That's me playing football/soccer!

  13. Thought I knew what fun was. What did I know? Those games are gone forever. I should just let 'em go, but…
